Description

This is a great antique Santo Carving With a star shaped halo!

Santo is a traditional New Mexican style of religious sculpture. The word “santo” is also used to refer to individual works in this style. Santos are carvings, either in wood or ivory, that depict saints, angels, or other religious figures. A Santero refers to a woodcarver who makes the image.

This wonderful Santo carving from Santa Fe is in very good condition. He is carved from very light wood (possibly basswood) and beautifully hand painted. The paint is pleasantly aged and peppered with small chips and scratches suggesting he may have done some traveling over the years. Despite these minor blemishes the surface remains stable and is not flaking.

Mary purchased this Santo in Santa Fe, NM in the late 1980’s. We have kept him over the years as an enjoyable part of the Sparger Road decor but it’s time to make some room on the shelf. Here’s your chance to get this wonderful piece of highly collectible southwest americana for your own collection!

This early 1900’s Santo stands 18 inches tall.

This item ships from our family farm location in Mt. Airy, NC. It is part of the M. Sparger Antiques collection. In other words; that’s our mama, we’re selling this for my mom, Mary Sparger. The listed price is dealer direct, there is no markup. We sell Mary’s pieces because we’re nice and she wants nothing to do with the internets :)

Mary has been in the antiques and collectibles business for decades. The Sparger home and antiques collection has been featured in Country Living Magazine, Early American Life Magazine and also on televisions “The Good Life” hosted by Mary Emmerling.
